Pryor Oklahoma Area History

Gateway To The Lakes!
A Growing Community In The Foothills Of The Ozark Mountains

Indians originally called this area "Coo-Y-Yah" -
the place of huckleberries. Nathaniel Pryor,
great-grandnephew of Pocahontas and scout with the Lewis and Clark Expedition, set up a trading post near what is now Pryor.

Pryor Creek, as it was called, was incorporated in 1951. As years went by, the city was most often referred to as Pryor.

In 1963, because of historical significance, the community decided not to drop the word "creek" from the city's name.

While "Pryor Creek" remains the official name, most residents refer to the community simply as Pryor.

You'll find museums, attractions, events, festivals and water activities. Pryor is a growing community with many dreams and opportunities.
